What is a Health Coach?

We all need coaches and growing up, we all have coaches. From the soccer fields to theater, we thrive from having someone ‘in our corner’. Coaches teach us skills and hold us accountable towards growth. We hit adulthood… and boom, all the coaches are gone. 

We all know the stats of health in the U.S.– and they are not great…. According to the CDC, more than one third of American Adults struggle with obesity. Obesity leads to many of the leading causes of death: heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer. Our relationship to our body directly impacts our confidence and self-esteem. Health care costs and statistics aside: when our health is out of balance, we are not living to our fullest potential. This is our real problem. 

Health is our greatest wealth! Health is the vehicle that allows us to live a fulfilling and purposeful life. Did you know that the #1 predictor of longevity is how well YOU rate your health! I find this mind-blowing. The power is in our mind-set. 

How did we get to this place?

1. An abundance of junk food available at our every turn
2. A powerful and convincing food marketing industry telling us (and our kids!) WHY we should eat their fake food.
3. Millions of dietary theories confusing all of us.

No wonder we are RIGHTLY and TOTALLY confused about food, diet and lifestyle. 

So back to a coach- a coach guides and teaches us to better our skills and meet our goals. Through active listening a coach knows when to push for change and when to offer guidance. Making behavioral changes around health is tough. A health coach is there to provide the support, education and ACCOUNTABILITY needed to make changes towards health and wellness. 

We all want to thrive and dialing our health habits in is our first step. Meeting your health goals will not only let you feel good and confident about the way you look, but support you in being the best version of you! Today’s medical model is geared towards disease management and it does that wonderfully. A health coach is the missing link within our current health care system. Taking knowledge and turning it into action.

It is important to understand what a health coach does and does not, to know if this type of relationship is right for you. A health coach does not treat, diagnose or prescribe medications to clients. They also do not take the place of any medical practitioner. The health coach creates strategies around real, lasting lifestyle changes that will affect not only the diagnostic label, (i.e., pre-diabetic or celiac disease) but enhance ones overall feelings of health and wellness.

Your health coach will look at the whole picture, from diet to relationships. They will make health recommendations that are easy to implement into your personal lifestyle.
